Eight years ago a new international convention introduced a global ban on cluster munitions – a result of long negotiations following the public outcry caused by reports about the severe humanitarian consequences of the use of these weapons in recent conflicts. Following the adoption of the Convention on Cluster Munitions on 2008 a number of countries, including New Zealand, introduced legislation restricting the financing of cluster munitions as well as other types of controversial weapons, such as anti-personnel mines and nuclear weapons. Recent reports about investments by leading New Zealand and Australia-based schemes in companies involved in controversial weapons have raised public attention, with significant implications for targeted investors.
An active position on controversial weapons helps investors mitigate reputational as well as potential legal risk.
Join us for a live webinar on Wednesday, 28 September, for a discussion of the issues investors should consider when preparing and implementing an active position on controversial weapons. During this session, we will discuss:
- Global and local regulatory landscape
- Stakeholder expectations and the role of investors
- Corporate involvement in controversial weapons
